I intended the housing for the guess the time clock to be very simple, not over designed, just a shell that would fit the inner workings and have a clear, ergonomical form. The tilted facia enables the user to have a clearer view of the screen as well as easier use of the mounted keypad.

The choice to use wood as the base material was an aesthetic one as well as being easily attainable. I liked the contrast between the organic wood grain and the animated screen.

As colour had been a strong aesthetic throughout my project, I felt this was the obvious way to go with the guess the time clock. I would use colour as the accuracy indicator. Some way of showing the user how close they had guessed to the real time.

After establishing a structure of what I wanted the object to do, I then needed to find a way to apply it. A Flash animation seemed the simplest option, coding a digital clock face to change colour as the time was entered. As you typed in your guessed time, depending on how close to the real time you were, the digits would turn pinker for earlier or greener for later. So you would know if the digits turned this colour, you had guessed around 15 minutes later than the real time.

I then wanted to house this screen animation with a keyboard to create one object.

From the "What's the Time, Mr. Wolf" document, I found people took a certain enjoyment out of being able to guess at the time. There was a certain competitive edge to it amongst participants. I hadn't considered that the findings would be of interest to anyone but myself. However, all participants requested confirmation of their own accuracy and how it compared to others. Some wanted a second shot at it.

It began to uncover itself as a potential learning tool. It could be a way of gauging your own personal accuracy at guessing the time against the real time. If I could design a way to structure a built in accuracy indicator, the user could learn their own patterns and improve.

Could this remove the need for a standard clock?

I wanted to consider how this could work as a real world application. I decided it would need to expand from 2D into a working object.

This started out as a very basic level investigation into peoples relationship with clocks and time, as a construct. I wanted to see if there was a pattern or average in how accurately people were able to guess the time without the use of a clock.

I created this document to gather my findings aesthetically. The user was asked to guess the time (without cheating, thank you) by colouring in the appropriate digits.

The design was inspired from a project by Maarten Baas that considered how our measurement and understanding of time would be altered if we ourselves became the clock. (See it here)

Apple Timer

Japanese designer, Che-Wei-Wang has also looked into the concept of alternative methods of communicating time. He says, "Can we watch decay? Can we see glass as a fluid slowly slumping and deforming over time? Everything is in constant flux, yet we consider many things around us static and fixed." It was this idea of decay that I found to be most interesting.

As the previous part of my project had taken place in my kitchen, I realised I was surrounded by decaying materials.

So, I picked an apple. I took a bite and captured an image of this one apple every minute, over an hour. I wanted to question whether the browning of this apple was a method of time keeping that I would feel comfortable with. And, it wasn't. As a timing device, it's subjective, variable. Unreliable.

But I thought there was something quite poetic about this narrative of this one apple at this one time, in this one place. For that one hour, it did keep time. So I turned this narrative into a book, documenting this apple's story. It features removable swatches at the back that track the apples colour over the hour, so, in theory, you could apply it to your own apple.

Whilst living without clocks, I began to take more notice of how long activities took to complete. I knew how long I took to get ready in the morning, how long my toaster took to perfect my toast. I decided to try applying this to tangible, readable means.

I had timed a range of my kitchen appliances and chose to present this graphically. After using a timeline to connect these time spans, I then singled out individual appliances and documented their range of potential timings. By tagging a toaster or a kettle with this information, I was then able to use these objects as timers in their own rights, removing the need for a standard kitchen timer.

This was perhaps one of the most pivotal parts of my project, my pursuit of Timelordianship.

I kept a diary, wherein I put all my daily activities and consequential observations to specific times. I then flipped the diary, and the rules. I removed all my clocks and continued to keep a diary of my observations as a result of this.

As this had been such a focal point of my process, I wanted to design a way of communicating what I'd learnt to others. As well as a way of allowing them to take part in their own experiment. What resulted was a takeaway booklet that encourages the user to live by the clock for a week, with the potential to then remove their clocks and continue to make observations.

I gave these away at the exhibition, to anyone who seemed interested in my project process.

Or who liked the colour of the paper.

NTWICC has now progressed to a level that might not cause people to go into a frantic panic when used. Which I think is good. It is now user specific, basing a recipe around the most listened to album on their iTunes. The familiar songs are rearranged in a way that fits within the timings of the recipe, using the beginnings and ends of songs as measurements.

I wanted the graphic identity to allow it to sit nicely alongside cookery books. Et ouila.

I like the idea of telling the time of day using colour.
The colour of the sky changes over the day, so what if we had to rely on this to tell the time?
I want it to work as an alternative reliable way of telling time.
Perhaps it might incorporate the changing shades of the sky, so it could be used as a self -education tool. From reading this 'clock' I would eventually be able to read the sky.

If not, it sure looks purdy.

I have begun looking into the idea of using other methods or objects as time keeping devices.
The most successful and certainly most interesting has been the concept and model for a CD that you can cook along to. It includes a CD of 6 (loosely) food related tracks and a recipe that involves using specific points within the soundtrack as a gauge of timings.
FOR EXAMPLE, one step reads; "Start slicing the red onion as the first chorus of Fat Children opens..."
This was to examine whether I would be comfortable using an unofficial method of timing whilst undergoing a task where timings are quite important. I was not.
I definitely intend to develop this object further, maybe give it to a couple of friends/colleagues to try out. Here are a couple of images from my... experience. (They are a bit blurry because as soon as the CD started I became flustered and manic).

I have progressed with my final project to a stage where I am now trying to communicate my research into Reliance through a single object.
The object I have opted for is the clock.
At the moment, I'm just taking apart 99p travel clocks and distorting their function/visual language/familiarity, as a way of questioning their reliability.

Today is hand-in day for our Context Report documents so I thought I would take a few photos while it is still in decent condition. This is not to imply that they get marked down the pub by a rabble of rowdy lectures who use them as beer mats/ash trays. But honestly, you never know.

I could explain a little about its content (because, as Desmond kindly pointed out "Doesn't that title just apply to everything?"), but for now I will just put up some pretty pictures.
Overall though, it is focussed on the idea of the relationship between user and object being based on reliance and how, as a designer, I am able to manipulate this.

This is (a poor photograph of) my mum's crimbo present last year. She is is a character that features in my illustrated cards and mum has become quite fond of her.
I wasn't as creative this year. Although I was just as frugal (part of mums present this year was a small card announcing I was cooking Christmas roast and giving her the day off).

Recently, my time has been taken up by theoretical workings (I'm currently writing my Contextual Report) so I haven't had much to show. But, the writing is (potentially) over and I am now on to the design of the document.
Thing is though, in all my remembering how to write, I have now forgotten how to design.

It's hard to tell any more, but I want my final degree project to explore the idea of Subconscious Reliance, people or forces that we rely on without consideration or gratitude.
I particularly am interested in the idea of the hidden worker.
There are several angles I will approach this from, I think;
The Invisible (ie. electricity)
The Natural (ie. gravity, earthworms)
The Hidden (ie. night shift workers)

This post was really just to remind myself that I need to be constantly thinking about this.
Rather than just taking each workshop week as a separate, disconnected activity.

Last week we had a joint debate project with the BA Design second years. The topic my group was given was "Design Should Not Serve Industry", which went against a group with the opposite statement. We took this and focused on the argument "Design Should Not Serve Industry, it Should Lead it".
Throughout the week we designed various means of communicating and solidifying our argument. Number 1 was a propaganda flyer. Number 2 was an object that had to embody our debate. We wanted an object that would highlight how industry lead design has lulled the consumer into accepting the familiar, the mundane. It had to be something that would not only cause people to question it, but also question why they were questioning it. And it should probably be a bit gross.
So we set about dying some eggs...

We are raising money for our degree show at the end of the year and so far have got off to a good start.

What's funny is that usually, I have around a month to develop, produce and get sick to death of a project to the point I hate it more than anything I've ever done in my life. However, I have actually managed to achieve this within a 4 day period.

Although, I did research what message the colour of a rose carries and it was quite interesting.

I have stuck to my guns over the mark making project.
The design concept for this project is based around lipstick marks acting as a messaging tool. When they are left on a mans collar, they say "I'm sleeping with your husband". When they are left on a wine glass in a bar, they say "I'm here to meet a man". (All opinions and conclusions are those of the blogee and in no way reflect fact or truth).
From there, I wanted to look at sending specific messages through different mediums in the lipstick. The idea I ended on was to design lipstick that's colour is specific to a certain meaning and then if stamped on to something, passes on that message.
Sooooo, that's what I'm gonna do.
Maybe take the colour from flowers, I know the colour of roses has a certain relevance.
Something like red=love, orange=friendship, yellow=goodbye. I will have to research that a bit more thoroughly/at all.

Well, my direction has changed a lot over the weekend.
I meandered down the route of nature, metamorphosis, growth etc. but eventually I got so lost in all the absolute bullshit I found myself trying to rationalise that I had to about turn.
SO, I started to think about what I literally found to be an ugly thing. And I ended up at smoking. (Not to be confused with I ended up smoking. Although I did buy my first ever pack of cigarettes. And got IDed).
Then I started to question how smoking (therefore cigarettes) could be made uglier.
By making the actual cigarette ugly, you would potentially put people off smoking, which is not an ugly thing, it's a positive thing...
So I am thinking that creating an appealing, 'beautiful' cigarette would result in an even uglier design. WOULD IT???
Because I now only have 4 days to rationalise, design and produce this (plus the other brief), we'll say it would.

Lipstick on Your Collar

Matt has been kissing most things within a kissable distance today.
As well as being a bit odd, this has also been a bit of an inspiration towards the mark making project. Lipstick marks have quite a sleazy connotation, lipstick on a collar, on a wine glass. They are evidence of an affair, proof it wasn't dinner for one last night.
This could be an interesting direction to consider. Accusative mark making.

Making your Mark

The second project I am considering over the next week is focused on mark making. How marks are made, what process occurred to put them there, what affect it has had on its surroundings...
Using footprint as an example, I want to look at how an incidental mark can illustrate a place and how I could use this process as a design technique or tool.

Walking through uni, I noticed there are heaps of scars and marks on the walls from previous décor/careless maneuvering. I have absolutely no idea where I'm going to go with this, but they were almost like memory marks, a record of what had been there before.

Maybe I will make a photo album out of them. How sweet.

What is 'Ugly'?

I DON'T BLOODY KNOW.
I'm trying to dissect what is standardly considered beautiful to create something ugly.
I am finding it a lot more difficult than I thought. My original concept was to take something I consider beautiful and change an aspect of it (eg the material/shape) to transform it into something beautiful.
As a sort of model of this idea, I have been looking at squares as the ultimate beauty. They are symmetrical. They are perfect. They are structured.
So by slight distortion can a square become ugly?

The outcome has ended up almost as a comment on beauty, or at least our perception of it.
Considering beauty from the Cleopatra complex.
To be honest, I don't think she was all that.

And here are the final photos from the Hendricks event I designed for, with Bompas & Parr.

It all looks pretty amazing, makes all the scalpel blisters seem worthwhile.

There's more victorian clip-art than you can shake a stick at, but I do love the Hendricks brand identity. I thoroughly enjoyed this project, this style of design is one I can very much see myself doing in future.

Or at least hope to.

Explanation Operation

So this is what we did with bag full o' dog toys.
They were used in Bompas & Parr's stall at the V&A Village Fete, over the weekend. Their stand was comprised of a live game of Operation.
This involved shoving your hand into Harry (Parr's) 'stomach' and retrieving a food item (see; dog toys) that he had eaten that day.

Inside each of these was a prescription from the doctor that announced whether you had 'won' or not. (These are the little things I designed)

When I asked how it was all set up under the operation table I was told that it was just magic.
I believe this, but the inside of his stomach did have a distinctly jelly-ish consistency to it.

All in all it was a fun evening.

When I was interning at Dazed & Confused, they asked me to have a go at designing the layout for the Fashion Forward piece (in this months edition).
So I did.
I doubt whether they will have used any of it, but I certainly gave it a shot. And they said they'd put my name in the masthead (whether it's the right name or not is yet to be discovered...). Pretty exciting though.
Any way, these first 3 are the ones they were the most positive about.
In a "that might have to do" kind of way.

I was just checking out the playlist on Dazed Digital (to see if anyone had made such comments as; "WOW, who did this illustration?" / "What a brill illustration (brillustration)" / "I am a fan of the illustration". (They hadn't.)), when I noticed they had gotten my bloody name wrong!
"Rachel Gold".
They must've assumed my email address (gold as in Goldsmiths, btw) was my name. Which would make sense, to be honest.
I was planning on turning this into a bit of office banter today, but then I thought that actually this is quite a brilliant Dazed style pseudonym. I could've come up with a better one, but I wasn't aware it was an option.
Plus I don't much like my surname. It's just a word really. Hmm, so is gold.

How to engage 400 people at one time

Some builders burst a mains pipe outside the studio the other day. It pretty much entertained us for a good 30 minutes. 30 MINUTES it went on. We discovered why, when we went outside (to take more photos). The builders had dealt with the situation by running to their van, opening a beer and reading the papers.
There were kids down the street, dancing (and screaming) around in it. How did they know it wasn't bad water?
The people in the offices opposite saw us watching them watching and gave us smiles that said, "this is MAD, what a lark ", and we all became friends for that 30 minutes.

This is some of the packaging I designed for Bompas & Parrs' project with Hendrick's Gin.
They are catering on an old train carriage that will travel up and down the country. As part of the menu, they have designed a take on traditional food trolley... delecacies (egg sandwich, crisps and a piece of fruit). This is what I was asked to design for. Obviously.

I am also doing a work placement here, at Bompas & Parr . I have had the opportunity to be part of some pretty exciting projects since I've been here. They are essentially "bespoke" (I don't think they are fond of that word) caterers/event designers/jelly makers. Which doesn't sound essential. But it's bloody brilliant.
Imagine combining all the things you love (OK; food, sharks, Sailor Jerrys, rounders, sleep) and creating a buisness out of them. (OK; ........) AMAZING.
It's been such fun to be part of, to be honest.

So it's been a while. But I have lots to show for it (some of which I will evidence now, while I'm waiting to bring my washing in).
At the minute, I am interning at two places, one of which is Dazed & Confused. These are some of the illustrations I designed for the Dazed Digital June playlist. The only criteria I was given was that it had to feature a cassette tape. (Incedently, the first cassette tape I ever bought was 'Before The Rain', by Eternal) The first image is the one they went for in the end. I was glad about that, the other ones felt a bit forced, not really me. Do you know what I mean?

I recently took part in a live group project with Nokia and design company Kin. We were asked to design an exhibition space to promote a new technology Nokia were releasing called So-Lo (Social Location). These are some of my illustrations for one of our three initial ideas we presented to Kin. It depicts a wall made from small, detachable cards that act as a tracking device of each person that takes one. This would then be mapped on an online GPS map to be shared amongst the users of the space, showing their journeys since the exhibition.

This was actually not our final design idea, as that consists of a video that we have yet to put online. As soon as it's up, I'll pop it on here. Promise.

Camdens Crawling

So this is what I did yesterday, I went to the Camden Crawl.
I minced around the streets, saw an alien invasion (The Big Pink (ace) >> top pic), watched Madness perform on an open top bus (bottom pic) didn't spot Joe Cornish and just generally queued for long periods of time. I had a fun time, but the thing is, no one seems that bothered by actually seeing the bands. But then when they do and I had to queue, I got annoyed, so...

Plus I spent most of the evening wishing I had worn more black and less flower-in-my-hair.

So here it is, the finished portfolio. All in all I'm pretty happy with it, just everything's a bit BIG. But some nice little touches; fabric swatches for tactility, transparency paper for the title pages...
Binding the thing was a bit of an experience. I taught myself the art of Japanese stab binding (with A LOT of help from Charlotte), which I personalised by using ribbon instead of the traditional string.
It is certainly not a mans portfolio.

Designing for Death

Everything can be designed for.
This design stems from the shocking discovery of how many people die unnoticed in their homes each year. Some remaining undiscovered for almost a year. I didn't want to tiptoe around this. I wanted to design for these people. Not to save them from death but to save them from an unnoticed one.
My final outcome was a product that would weigh the amount of post that came through a persons door and was left unopened. When it reached a certain weight, after a certain time, the letterbox would jam and alert the outside world (or at least the postman).
This is an instruction kit I designed as a continuation of this project that illustrates how the user might make their own model. I chose to deal with this sensitive subject in an overly practical way. This created a strong contrast that might highlight this issue that shouldn't be occurring in such a communication obsessed culture.

So recently I was asked to design a magazine for super duper music site Rockfeedback.com. It was only wee, (A5, 8 pages to be scientific) and they had a pretty clear idea in their collective head. These are some words that were bandied around;

lo-fi . zine . zerox . punk . sorry . D.I.Y . illustrate . clean . thanks

So I wrote these words on a piece of paper and hung it from my working line.

I made these as part of a mini workshop brief. Here are three things this process involved;
- redesigning or developing upon an existing object
- creating a troll-sized, waterproof turban
- making a mould from Alegenate. Which is minty. And green.

So why a blog? Why now? Well, I like talking about myself and sometimes I want people to see something I have done. Kind of like a child. Plus I got Myspace, (bypassed Bebo/Bebop/Bobep/Bopeep), then got Facebook, then got Twitter, so this must be the next step. I think this is the most exciting thing I have done since I got a squirrel to sit on my knee.
